Once the water reaches a rolling boil, carefully remove it from heat. Add one tablespoon of sugar to the boiling water at a time, stirring it each time as the sugar dissolves. Continue to add sugar until no more sugar dissolves. This will take enough amount of sugar, but not necessarily the entire three cups. Make sure you complete the process quickly because as water will cool down it will accept less and less sugar.
Now you can add some food coloring to the sugar solution if you wish. This will produce colored sugar crystals.
Pour the sugar solution into the jar and set the pencil with the yarn across the open mouth of the jar. Make sure the end of the yarn tied to the pencil is in the sugar solution.
Place the jar in a calm area where it is not disturbed or jostled. Prefer keeping it out of direct sunlight. Cover the top of the jar with a thin gauze or paper or plastic wrap to ensure it is safe from dust and bugs. Be careful while moving the jar so that you do not spill hot water on your hands.
Leave the crystal set up alone. Within 24 hours of the experiment sugar crystals will start forming. These crystals will be smaller in size at the beginning, simply coating the yarn with small grains of sugar. By the end of the week or after 10 days you will notice large sugar crystals.
