How to Build Deck Stairs
October 12, 2009 at 12:10 am

How to Build Deck StairsBuilding stairs can be a task but with a little sense of architecture and knowledge of the building homes etc can be useful to build deck stairs. It will not only make a pro but also save you a whole lot of money.

A stairway comprises of three the tread, the stringer and riser. The stringer is the sides, the riser the height and the tread is the width of the stairs. Building stairs is complicated but you can follow the standing line and sleeping line example.

Measure the distance from the deck to the upper level. The area from where the deck stairs will begin needs to be flat. You can attach the stringers to the concrete ground.

Never make steps too steep since they are difficult to climb up and down. Give enough width and keep enough distance for comfortable climbing. Find the height from the level up and the bottom and divide the number of steps accordingly. You can do this by dividing the total height with the height of each step and you will have the number of steps that will run from bottom to top.

Now measure the width of the staircase to build a frame. You will have to build frame on both sides to support the stairs. You will also need to build a support system below the stairs to keep the stairs steady.

If you have learnt about standing lines and sleeping lines in school then steps work very similarly. You will have to find the width of the steps the number of steps and begin cutting timber for the laying the steps. How to Build Deck Stairs

Calculate the vertical height and the horizontal. The vertical part of timber will support the horizontal part that is the step. You can use screws or nails to fix them. You can also use a resin adhesive on the timber before you lay each step and then fix them with screws or nails. This will ensure that the steps stay in place.

Keep going step by step till you reach the last step.

You can now fix aluminium or steel railings on the sideways. Yu can also use timber.

Now you can use sand paper and sand all the steps. Work carefully, over rough edges and smoothen them out. Now use a varnish or wood lacquer and apply it over the steps. You can use a shade of your choice to give the steps the right tint.

Le the steps dry out for a day or two. You do not want foot prints over your newly built deck stairs.

How to Build a Retaining Wall
October 11, 2009 at 7:04 pm

How to Build a Retaining WallSo you have a terrace garden and thinking of how to build a retaining wall. Well, building a retaining is not all that difficult. You can easily do it yourself in a few days, depending upon the size of your garden.

Firstly, you will need to decide if you want a concrete retaining wall or a one with stones without any mortar.

You will get stones that are flat on two sides to keep your retaining wall stable and even.

Measure how long you would want the wall to be. 3 feet retaining usually works well for most terrace gardens. Once you have measured the height you will need to dig the earth half of that height, however digging deeper keeps the wall from running down.

How to Build a Retaining Wall

You can use a hoe to dig the earth. Once you have reached a sufficient distance, remove loose soil and keep the foundation clear. This is a basic rule for building any structure. You need a strong and deep foundation to hold the height and weight.

Now start keeping the stones in the dug up foundation. Remember use big flat stones. You can support it with other stones too. Keep building height by placing stones. You can use some soil to let the stones hold each other. Finish by laying flat stones on top of the wall horizontically.

After this place deadman stones vertically at different places to hold the wall. Dig a hole first and place them. Deadman are long flat stones. Now place the capstones over them to give an even look.

After you have finished building your retaining wall you can grow shrubs like juniper, thyme or plain grass around it. This will also further anchor the retaining wall.
