How to Write an Application Letter
October 9, 2009 at 9:03 am

How to Write an Application LetterYou may successfully write an impressive resume and be perfectly suitable for a job, but if your cover letter or application letter accompanying your CV is poorly written then there are pretty good chances that you may miss the best opportunity. The main purpose of any cover letter is to grab the employer's attention and to let him know why your resume is worth a read.

It acts as a medium through which you sell yourself by pointing out key features of your resume. If you want to know the right method of writing an application letter, then following instructions will prove to be very helpful:

Instructions

  1. Put your address at the top right hand side of the page. Skip two to four lines and then enter the date, lined up with the left margin. Then skip again two to four lines and type the name and address of the company you are applying to. Try to address the letter to a specific person, if possible. Make sure you choose the right fonts and correct line spacing so that your letter fits on one page. Times New Roman is the most apt font that you can use.
  2. Specifically state in your first paragraph which position you are applying for and also why you are suitable for this position. For instance, you can start with "I read about your open position for finance manager in Wednesday's edition of The News Gazette. My ten years of experience as a finance manager at XYZ Company and my good work records make me a suitable candidate for the post."How to Write an Application Letter
  3. Your next paragraph must highlight your qualifications and work experience that match to the requirements of the position. This is the paragraph where you sell yourself by pointing out qualities that will benefit the company you wish to work with. You need not include every job experience you ever had, just state the ones that are relevant to the post you are applying for. Clearly specify the responsibilities you had carried and also mention any honors or awards that you received for your good work.
  4. If you are a fresher with no job experience, then mention your educational qualification, internship experience or other college experience. Try to highlight your strengths but be modest and honest in your approach. For instance, you can write something like "in my college days I participated in several extra curricular activities that prepared me for my career."
  5. Close your letter with a strong paragraph that briefly sum ups the selling points made in the body of the letter. Your closing should round the letter off, leaving a good and positive image on the reader. You must mention about any other document or attachment (including the CV) that you are enclosing, and also express willingness to provide any further information that the concerned reader may like to know. The last closing sentence could be something like this “I appreciate your effort of reviewing my application and resume and I will look forward for your response.”
  6. After completing the last paragraph, skip four lines and then type your full name. Put your signature between the closing and the typed name and your application letter is ready to be delivered.

Tips

  • Carefully read the job ad or job opening announcement so that you clearly mention the specific qualifications in your cover letter that the company is looking for.
  • A good cover letter is one that is not just a re-hash of your resume. It should actually pull highlights from your CV and tie it wisely with the job description. It must be like a bridge between your resume and the position you are applying for.
  • Try being consice and clear in your letter. Avoid using unnecessary words.

  2. If there is any large crack on the brick, then remove it with wire brush so as to remove loose material that may cause problem while painting. You can use pure acrylic or silicone/acrylic caulk to seal the brick cracks. Also remove any loose brick or mortar material, if any from the surface that is to be painted.
  3. Now clean the entire surface by scrubbing the bricks with mild detergent and scrub brush. You can also use a power washer for this purpose. Set the nozzle of the hose to the highest pressure and make sure you wear eye protection while carryout the cleaning process with the hose. In case, if there is moss, mold or/and mildew on the brick, then remove them by using a mix of 3 parts of water and 1 part of ordinary bleach.
  4. Allow the brick to dry thoroughly before painting. This is important because brick is porous and hence it may seem to have dried up from outside but is actually wet from inside. Make sure it properly dries up otherwise your efforts will go to waste.
  5. When the brick is dry, you can roll, brush or even spray on coat of conditioner paint. Let it dry for at least 3 to 4 hours. However, do not leave it for too long because the surface will get dirty and will need re-cleaning.
  6. Go for 100% acrylic elastomeric wall coating that is similar to Stucco Paint (i.e. Valspar Duramax ). Allow it to dry thoroughly and then apply the second coat of elastomeric wall coating.

Make Your Own Tornado
October 8, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Make Your Own TornadoTornadoes are basically violent rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground level. These are powerful demonstrations of natural forces with vortex as its centre. This article will vividly illustrate how to create a tornado like effect in a bottle. If you are looking forward to a science fair, then this particular experimental project can be an interesting option for you. However, adult's supervision is required for this project.

Instructions

  1. First, take two empty 2-liter plastic bottles and remove the labels from them. Now take off the caps from the bottles and wash the bottles properly. Make a ½ inch hole at the centre of each bottle cap by drilling them. An adult help should be taken for drilling.
  2. Now place both the caps on their flat ends and seal their holes by applying a thin bead of silicon caulk. Allow this sealing to dry and then wrap duct tape around the outer side of the caps to tightly club them together.
  3. Carefully screw the caps back to one of the bottles and fill the other bottle with 3/4 water. Now add glitter and dishwashing Make Your Own Tornadosoap or food coloring and confetti to the water. The presence of these materials will help you notice vortex more clearly.
  4. Now twist the empty bottle to the top of the other bottle that is filled with water. While holding the bottles by duct tape with one hand, try to support the bottom of the bottle with your other hand.
  5. Turn the bottles upside-down and spin them in a circular motion. As the water will drain into the bottom of the bottle, you will notice tornado effect with vortex formation.
  6. You may experiment with more or less water as well as with different liquids or materials that is added to water. You can also try spinning the bottle slower or faster and notice the effects.

Tips to Remember

  • In order to remove the stubborn bottle labels, fill the bottle with warm water and soak it in warm, soapy water for some time. There are good chances that it will loosen the adhesive and labels will come out easily.
  • If you want you can get a kit with the caps already attached to one another. It is often available at hobby shops and teacher supply stores.
  • Make sure you do not add too much food coloring because it will be difficult to view the tornado inside.
  • Presence of adult is must, especially while using handle power tools.
