| by Caroline Middlebrook Modifying the Administrator The default WordPress installation has a single user called ‘admin’ which has full privileges over the installation and this account allows you to login to your blog and begin work after initial installation. However if you create posts whilst logged in as the admin user they will show up with ‘admin’ as the author and this is undesirable if you wish to promote a personal or business brand with your blog. Seeing as you are the blog owner you obviously also need full privileges so what I tend to do is simply to edit the default admin user and give it the chosen name. You still login with the username of ‘admin’ but posts are published, they come up as having being written by the name you chose. To edit users from your dashboard go to ‘Users’ and then click the username ‘admin’. This allows you to input the first name, last name, email address and some other details. Once you have entered the name make sure you also click the drop down ‘Display name publicly as’ and select your name, rather than admin. Be sure to also change your password to something secure and then click the save button. Configuring Comment Moderation A good blog will attract comments which unfortunately will include plenty of spam as well as legitimate comments so we’ll need to fiddle around with the settings a little. Go to ‘Settings’ and then ‘Discussion’ and look through the options. Some of the options in this section have changed a little in recent releases of WordPress but the main sections to be aware of are: You need to ensure that the boxes marked ‘allowed to comment’ and ‘allowed to leave trackbacks’ are switched on. If these are off, nobody can comment on your blog at all! You can alter the email settings here. This is largely a matter of preference. By default WordPress will send the administrator an email when a new comment is left but that can soon become overwhelming if your blog becomes popular. I turn this off and make a point of checking my comments on a daily basis. Another decision to be made is whether or not to allow comments to be immediately published or have them sit in a moderation queue waiting for your manual approval. Personally, I like to allow comments to be published as this is more satisfying for the reader but it can be easily abused by spammers or people who leave abusive comments of some kind. Use your discretion here. Generally speaking, the comments that are left by real people (as opposed to spammers) are fine. There is a plugin called akismet which is installed with all WordPress installations and that will catch 99% of spam so I rarely feel the need to moderate my comments too much. However, one thing that can be irritating is when people drop in too many links so I specify that any comment with 2 or more links will go into the moderation queue. When a comment enters the moderation queue you will physically have to click the ‘approve’ button for each comment before it gets published live which obviously causes a delay for the comment poster so my advice is to use moderation sparingly. |

According to a recent news article, we have a tendency to consume more when eating with heavier people who we know well. A US research team looked at kids eating habits. They found that the heavier ones ate more when they were with their heavier pals than when they were with their slimmer friends. The entire group, who varied in weight and were aged nine to fifteen, ate more when they were with their pals. But pairing up overweight friends led to the biggest consumption of all. The research was featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It discovered that young teens eating habits are definitely affected by the company they keep. Of course, it’s not surprising that many felt they could eat more when they were comfortable with the company they were in. Adults would no doubt have demonstrated the same characteristics. What’s more, as our friends don’t usually challenge what we do, we assume that means they condone our behaviour. If you don’t know how to tell the difference between an African and an Asian elephant, you should learn. The differences in the elephant anatomy between the two species are minor, but they are there. Elephants have certain anatomical features which have evolved over the years and become extremely specialized. They live in warmer climates so certain body features have become adept at reducing body heat and allowing the elephant to thrive in high temperatures. Like other mammals they have a spine and central nervous system, as well as a heart that has four chambers. A four chambered heart is common to mammals and birds but a reptile heart has a three chambered heart. Elephants are the largest land mammals. African elephants are larger than Asian elephants. Male African elephants can grow to 12 feet tall at the shoulder and females grow to about 10 feet. With Asian elephants, males grow between 7 and 11 feet at the shoulder and females can be about the same. The physical differences between elephant subspecies include ear size, the number of ribs and minor differences in the tip of the trunk. They are not massive and all elephants have the same basic elephant anatomy including body shape and the presence of specially modified teeth. THe body shape of an elephant has not changed although the size has become smaller over millions of years. Ancestral pachyderms were much more massive, with thick legs and huge fat deposits under the skin. This, along with thick, dense fur kept the ancestor of the modern elephant warm in frigid conditions. The fat pad allowed them to survive during times when food was less plentiful. Now, elephants live in warm climates where food is easier to find and overheating is an issue. There is less of a fat deposit present in modern elephants and body hair is much thinner and sparser. The trunk is an important tool for the elephant. Although it seems thick and clumsy, it is actually capable of moving with great precision. The elephant uses its trunk to pick up food or other objects and bring it to the mouth. The trunk is tipped with a finger-like object. The Asian elephant has one protrusion at the tip of its trunk but the African elephant has two. Tusks have also changed since prehistoric times. Once, mammoths had huge tusks that curved out before them. Modern tusks are very impressive but are shorter. This may be because now elephants, especially Asian elephants live in areas where there is a lot of vegetation that longer tusks may get tangled in. Some Asian elephants actually have tushes instead of tusks. These are modified teeth which are smaller and cannot be seen if the elephant’s mouth is shut. Some elephants native to Sri Lanka do not have tusks regardless of whether they are male or female. Elephants are fascinating to observe because they have changed so much over the years. In my personal experience, I am unable to even tell a difference in performance when AVG is running even if I am playing Diablo 2 or Age of Empires 3 which both require a good amount of resources. This is another reason AVG is ranked high. Second, when it comes to detecting viruses, AVG is among the best. Can you believe that AVG has a 93% detection rate? The free version has a little lower and the retail version a little higher but this is the average. Even with the difference, I have had the free version of AVG find numerous things that McAfee and Norton Antivirus missed. Thirdly, and the best fact about AVG is that it’s FREE! AVG free has been shown to beat many retail antivirus programs as well as many other free ones. So it would seem that the retail version of AVG should be great and well it is. It beats its own free version by increasing speed and efficiency plus a few more features. Now, you don’t necessarily need the retail version if you know your way around a computer. You can just combine it with Spybot or Malwarebytes Anti Malware and be fine! If you aren’t so good with computers I would recommend the retail version. It is much nicer to have protection than to get a hacker stealing your identity! In the end, no program is going to be perfect and AVG like others has its downfalls. For AVG it’s a number of programs that AVG is not compatible with. If you have these then it’s probably a good idea to try another free virus scan and removal. These programs include: Webroot SpySweeper, ICQ toolbar, Session Manager 0.6.1.13 add-on, the StumbleUpon toolbar, System Protect, Dell Network Assistant, and Contafiscal 2000. Now I don’t think most people are going to have these however I wanted to throw out a warning anyway. In conclusion, AVG is excellent software that I highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a free solution to antivirus. It requires and uses fewer resources than many other antivirus programs, it detects approximately 93% of viruses and other malware, it has a FREE version, and there are only a few programs that it is not compatible with.
